New Ofsted report praises ‘nurturing’ Springfield Academy where pupils achieve well

Springfield Academy in Nottingham is a nurturing school where children feel safe, behave well and make progress, according to a newly published Ofsted inspection report.

Inspectors found that pupils are valued, respected and achieve well in most subjects.

They have highlighted that this is particularly the case for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities who achieve very well.

The report also notes that school leaders are driven to provide the very best education and experiences for pupils.

Jackie Hill, Headteacher, Springfield Academy, said: “We strive to be a friendly, welcoming and inclusive school at the heart of our community providing the best education for all pupils.

“It’s great to see that recognised in this positive Ofsted report. I am really proud of our staff and pupils.”

In line with the government’s new inspection framework, Ofsted has graded the Bulwell-based school across seven areas.

As part of that, early years and inclusion at Springfield Academy, on Lawton Drive, which is part of Tapestry Learning Partnership, have each been judged as being of a strong standard.

The seven areas and grades are:

  • Safeguarding standards - met
  • Early years - strong standard
  • Inclusion - strong standard
  • Achievement - expected standard
  • Attendance and behaviour - expected standard
  • Curriculum and teaching - expected standard
  • Leadership and governance - expected standard
  • Personal development and wellbeing - expected standard

Under Ofsted’s new style inspection reports, the strong standard refers to excellent consistent work that is making a real difference to children.

The expected standard is a high standard and shows that a school is doing everything it should for pupils. Safeguarding standards are judged as either being met or not met.

In other findings, inspectors have noted that early reading, writing and maths skills at Springfield Academy, which has 220 children on roll, are taught effectively. Children are supported to be independent, resilient and curious learners.

Leaders have high expectations for all pupils including those with special educational needs and disabilities, pupils who are disadvantaged, those who speak English as an additional language and those who are known to social care.

They promote an inclusive culture where pupils feel welcome and able to take part in all aspects of school life, and the curriculum is ambitious.

Staff build strong, trusting relationships with pupils and their families. This creates a culture of respect where pupils are confident that they can share any worries with staff.

Leaders recognise that to support pupils, they need a respectful and supportive partnership with parents and carers. As a result, relationships with the local community are positive.

Rigorous systems and processes are in place to ensure pupils attend school regularly. The support for pupils and their families is highly effective. As a result, most pupils attend school well.

Mark Mallender, Chief Executive Officer, Tapestry Learning Partnership, commented: “Springfield Academy staff go the extra mile to ensure pupils receive the very best education and experiences that help them to grow into confident, curious and caring individuals.

“This latest positive Ofsted report is a ringing endorsement of that and I would like to congratulate the school on their success.”
