New headteacher for Chellaston Academy in Derby
A new headteacher has been appointed at Chellaston Academy in Derby.
Damian Leese has 18 years’ experience working in education and started in post this month on 13th April 2026.
Prior to joining Chellaston Academy, which is part of Tapestry Learning Partnership, Damian was Vice Principal at Waverley School in Birmingham.
Damian said: “I am honoured to lead Chellaston Academy. By working with staff, students and their families, I will build on the school’s strengths and ensure that it remains a place where all young people can thrive.”
He added: “The school’s values of integrity, care and excellence are fundamental in preparing our students not only for academic success but for life beyond school. I am committed to embedding them in all that we do.”
Born in London, Damian grew up in Dorset and studied history at the University of Birmingham before securing his first teaching post with Teach First.
A Teach First ambassador, he was part of their first cohort in the West Midlands. He stayed in the region, progressing to teaching, curriculum management and senior leadership roles.
Chellaston Academy, on Swarkestone Road, has around 1,840 students aged 11 to 18 on roll and was graded 'good' by Ofsted following its last inspection in 2023.
Mark Mallender, Chief Executive Officer, Tapestry Learning Partnership, said: “Chellaston Academy has made strong strides during the last few years.”
He added: “I am delighted to welcome Damian and look forward to seeing him build on the progress already made given his expertise and strong commitment to the school’s ethos.”
